Teaching Literacy in the Classroom

There are many fun ways that literacy is taught in the classroom. I am sharing Literacy Activities in our Classroom!

Building Early Reading Skills

Everyday in our classroom we do activities to build reading skills. Above is our Library Center. The children love the Library Center. In this center the children share books with their friends. They retell stories, they have puppet shows and enjoy alphabet activities.

Every month the children complete the

I Can Read - Reader

It includes activities and sight words. The children enjoy these  great little books every month.

The children love Story Time!

Especially when Story Pieces are used along with the book.

All of these activities encourage the children to retell stories , ask questions or respond to text.

Building Early Writing Skills

The writing center is open, easy and fun! During Learning Centers the writing center is open to those who want to come and it is always fun! This center is to encourage writing.

Journal Writing is done as a Group Activity. The children enjoy Journal Time.  In my classroom I have never heard a child complain about writing. It is my hope that they all go to kindergarten with a love for writing ❤️

I made Word Cards out of the craft pieces for the writing center. All of these Activities encourage Emergent Writing.

Building Letter/Word Recognition and Letter Sounds

Each month we focus on new letters of the Alphabet.

We share them during Circle Time.

The children enjoy games that teach Letter and Word Recognition

The Monthly Alphabet Sheets help with teaching letter recognition and letter sounds.

The children make letter-sound connections during these activities.

Building Listening and Speaking Skills

During Circle Time and Social Situations the Children build listening and speaking skills.

They begin the school year by sitting on the rug during Circle Time and Story Time. They learn songs. They learn that the teacher speaks and to hear they must listen. They learn to raise their hand to speak. ( still working on this one lol ) They share information with the class.

They learn the basic skills of listening and communication during Circle Time.

During Activities throughout the day the Children learn listening, communication and cooperation.

An example is this game
